Material Shift is one of Construct’s annual pillars; a forward-thinking event series spotlighting unconventional and ground breaking approaches to materials in contemporary development. This series delves into how materials shape not only our buildings, but our cities, economies, and communities, from pioneering innovations to evolving market drivers and policy frameworks.

The first event in this series is deeply connected to Manchester’s developing skyline: People in Glass Houses. Ubiquitous in the city’s recent wave of towers, glass has become shorthand for urban ambition, modernity, and growth. But beneath the shimmering façades lie complex design, performance, and social questions

  • Is glass delivering on energy efficiency and climate targets?
  • How does it influence placemaking, liveability, and social cohesion?
  • What role does it play in the wider political economy of Manchester’s urban transformation?

This event goes beyond technical discussion of a material, it interrogates the development culture surrounding Manchester’s vertical expansion. We’ll explore the intersection of design, planning policy, market economics, and social value, offering a critical but constructive dialogue about the city’s future trajectory.

Key themes:

  • Innovation in glass technology: sustainable production, performance improvements, and post-carbon opportunities
  • Policy and planning: how material choices are shaped by the city’s growth ambitions, development frameworks, and net-zero commitments
  • Urban experience: what density and vertical living mean for residents, neighbourhoods, and public life
  • Development drivers: unpacking the economic, political, and investor Design accountability: aesthetics, climate resilience, and long-term social outcomes

This session offers an opportunity for professionals across architecture, development, planning, and engineering to critically engage with the material, policy, and human dimensions of Manchester’s transformation.

Join us to reflect on what’s driving Manchester’s current growth model and how it can be steered towards a more resilient, equitable, and future-ready urban landscape.
